Dryer Vent Services: How Can Lords Chimney Help?

Like the chimney system, the dryer venting system requires proper design and adequate air flow in order to function properly. In the past, most dryers were installed up against an exterior wall of the home, which meant the venting systems only had to travel a short distance in order to dispose of gases, heat, and lint.

However, modern constructions have focused more on homeowner convenience than on dryer vent efficiency and safety. That’s why so many newer homes have washers and dryers located on an interior wall of a bedroom closet or master bathroom.

Although this can take some of the burden off of the chore-doer, it often puts a larger burden on the appliance and venting system, as they require a much longer venting system in order to reach the outside. In many cases, these venting systems must wind and ascend and descend several times in their course through the home. Not only are these long, winding systems non-conducive to proper air flow, they tend to provide lots of nooks and crannies for lint to accumulate – and are more likely to have loose ductwork over time too.

Because air flow is often reduced in these long venting systems, hot air, lint and carbon monoxide tend to take much longer to exit the home. In many cases, this leads to greater lint buildup, which further hinders air flow and creates a potential fire hazard. This restriction and reduction of air flow also forces the appliance to work much harder and at hotter temperatures in order to fully dry your clothes. You can also expect to have higher energy bills with a poorly designed and installed dryer vent system.

Not only can all of this lead to a shorter appliance life, it is also much harder on your clothes.  And because many dryer vents are installed with simple duct tape, high heat and moisture from an overworked dryer can cause the tape to come loose.

To sum all that up nicely and simply – dryer vent cleanings are a must for ensuring proper airflow, less wear and tear, and a safer household. Book yours with us today.

Why Are Chimney Sweepings Important?

A fire just isn’t nearly as enjoyable if you have questions in the back of your mind about whether or not it poses a danger to you, your family, and your property. In addition, dirty chimneys can be smelly, smoky, and may contain debris and dead animals that can become fire hazards.

Our chimney technicians use closed-circuit cameras so that we are able to show you what the inside of your chimney looks like. In this way, we’ll be able to show you the “before and after” of your chimney prior to cleaning and afterwards. In most cases, a chimney inspection is necessary before a cleaning.

Chimney & Fireplace Troubleshooting – Whatever Your Problem, We Can Find It & Fix It

Have a strong feeling that something is not right with your chimney, but aren’t sure what the problem could be? Sometimes a “sick” fireplace does not present any symptoms of being in disrepair – which is why an annual inspection is necessary to check for hidden dangers – but other times there are some pretty surefire signs that your chimney and/or heating appliance are not operating as safely or efficiently as they should.

Some of the issues that our customers identify most often include ventilation and draft problems, smelly fireplaces, smoky fireplaces, and animals inside the chimney. Only a Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified chimney professional will be able to properly inspect, diagnose, and treat your sick chimney, but the following are a few signs that immediate attention is needed:

  • Ventilation & Draft Problems: Are you having problems with stove draft or smoky backup? Our chimney professionals can help you solve your chimney’s ventilation and drafting problems. We commonly find that these problems can be attributed to improper flue sizing, improper stovepipe sizing or configuration, flue blockage, air intrusion into the flue, insufficient chimney height, or mechanical depressurization. Sometimes a routine cleaning will do the trick, while other times we may recommend updating a piece of equipment on your chimney or adding a ventilation fan.
  • Smelly Fireplaces: Though some people find that musty fireplace smell charming, the truth is that your fireplace and chimney should not have much of an odor at all. In fact, if you’re smelling a hot or burnt smell, especially when it rains or is humid, it’s probably a good indication that there’s negative air pressure inside your home that’s causing your chimney to draw in outside air along with any foul chimney odors.
  • Smoking Fireplace: If smoke or soot is getting into your house, it may be that your damper isn’t opening all the way and may need to be replaced with a top-sealing damper. Or you may need a routine cleaning, which removes built-up creosote and improves draft. The fact is, lots of things can cause your fireplace to smoke, and getting to the bottom of it is important. We’re here to do just that.
  • Animal Invasion: Removing animals and their nests from your chimney is no job for amateurs. You will definitely want to depend on experienced chimney and fireplace service crews from Lords Chimney for this specialized task. Avoid further chimney damage, as well as harm to your home, those in it, and the animals themselves, by booking removal services with us right away. We’ll then install a cap to keep critters out for good.

Airflow & Your Chimney: How Does It All Work?

To better understand the problem with your chimney’s venting or drafting, let us explain how a chimney works and what function draft plays in an efficient and properly functioning heating appliance. Essentially, when a fireplace drafts, it moves the byproducts of combustion – including smoke and harmful gases – up your chimney and into the outside air. Though hot air rises naturally, lots of things can get in the way of proper drafting, meaning that you end up with smoke, soot, and toxins in your home. This is called backdrafting.

Now, a common problem with chimney ventilation is related to negative pressure issues. As air is removed from the home through fans or vents (i.e. bathroom fans, kitchen fans, etc.), it must be replaced – and, because today’s homes are built so air-tight, in many cases, the only place to bring air in is through the chimney. This explains many common complaints such as cold air coming from the fireplace when not in use, odor problems (i.e. the smell of wet ash or wet wood), and poor indoor air quality (cue respiratory issues).

Although glass doors can help reduce the flow reversal, they won’t actually eradicate the problem. This is why you need a professional to assess the situation and find the best solution possible.

Here at Lords Chimney, we’re experienced in all sorts of ventilation problems, and can offer you quality services and products that work. If you live in the Houston area and are experiencing problems with smoke, draft, or air quality in your home, count on our team. We are skilled and experienced at diagnosing and repairing drafting problems, and we’re confident we can help you.

What Can Be Done About Chimney Drafting Issues?

Drafting problems are very common with chimneys. Though there are a whole host of reasons why your chimney may be drafting improperly, the solutions are usually quite simple. With a routine inspection, a chimney technician will be able to determine what is at the root of the problem and present you with your best options for repair.

Remember – it is important to give venting and drafting problems your immediate attention, as problems with ventilation can result in smoke or carbon monoxide entering your living space and damaging your home or health.

Some of the drafting problems we find and correct most commonly are due to:

  • A broken or damaged damper
  • Incorrect firebox size
  • Incorrect chimney height
  • A chimney flue blocked by debris
  • Improper installation of chimney and/or heating appliance
  • Dirty or improper chimney cap
  • Structural damage within chimney
  • Creosote buildup
  • Animals nesting in chimney
  • Another appliance in room – such as a central vacuum, clothes dryer or a forced air furnace – that’s also competing for air within the house

At Lords Chimney, we have many ways of diagnosing and curing your ventilation problems, and we always begin with the easiest (and most inexpensive) cure, using more extensive solutions only as necessary.
